brainpowered #33: walking camera by warren ellis
"Moblog = mobile weblog, an online diary created on mobile devices. I've been doing this for many years with an email journal, BAD SIGNAL (in its previous incarnation, FROM THE DESK OF), which I've sent entries to from all over the world. I'm actually writing this on a mobile-enabled Handspring Visor PDA equipped with a fold-up keyboard. I haven't yet found a workable term for creating a moblog out of emailed photographs taken by and sent from a mobile phone. Someone tried to fly mopho, I've heard mophoblog, there's flog from fotolog via fotolog.net. Some friends and I chuck around futurephoneblog for a laugh. Moblog seems to be sticking."

the spoon... it hurts: this may, adhouse books has announced the release of "monkey and spoon", a new children's book by english creator simone lia that promises to answer the age old question of whether a monkey can love a spoon. it's the first i'm hearing of it and my curiosity is already piqued.

the subject is W.A.R.: each year, the small press expo (spx) offers aspiring cartoonists the chance to be published in their annual anthology. this year's theme is "war" and you're free to submit to them a 4 to 12 page b&w story up until jun 15th for consideration. more details on their submission guidelines page. if you're a professional artist looking for a writer, feel free to send me samples or a link to your portfolio at peter@artbomb.net (no large files please) and i'll pass it along to some of the writer's boards i belong to. no promises, etc.

new review: last exit before toll by shaffer, mitten and pietrusko
"On his way to some business meeting somewhere in Virginia, rocking out to Slow Ride on the AM radio, Charles' car breaks down and strands him in just north of the middle of nowhere. His car seems to be in need of permanent repair, his cell phone gets no service, and the waitress at the diner flirts back a little -- so as he settles in to wait out the repair, he starts to, in fact, wait out the rest of his life. The less you know, the better..."

now for something more serious: slowly but surely, it looks like comics are making some progress. here's a link to the comic books, comic strips, and graphic novels page at yale university library, that includes a bunch of interesting reading suggestions and website pointers. warning: i shouldn't blog this, but it's so fucking weird that i'm compelled to share. please DO NOT click on this link if you're offended by pornography and what not -- you've been fairly warned. matt found it and describes it as: "an adult graphic novel called CHROME. in which someone uses POSER to make a story about a chrome dude raping cavegirls, who are raped first by cave men. More dicks than an NRA meeting."

new review: planetes vol. 1 by makoto yukimura
"Rather than a gung-ho rush for the stars, there's a cautious, tempered idealism at play here: yes, Mankind should reach for the stars, but there will always be tragedies, there will always be casualties, there will always be losses, and there will always be interference from the more venal political agendas. The heroes are, after all, garbage men."

news: craig thompson's blankets is cleaning up more awards, including being named one of the best books of 2003 by the library journal. this is the first time a graphic novel has been named to this list and it shares the honors with marjane satrapi's persepolis:

both blankets and persepolis also made the young adult library services association (yalsa) best of 2003 list, along with jeff parker's the interman and jason little's shutterbug follies:
