summer reading:
(it actually felt like summer for the first time today in SF...)
new hampshire librarian marcia cannon recommends james kochalka's peanut butter and jeremy's best book ever! published by alternative comics in the dover community news:
"This is a simple, very sweet, funny and low-key comic book describing the squabbles and the neighborhood adventures of a cat and a crow. The two animals are true friends with small misunderstandings about birthday parties, hats, and other silly matters. The line drawings are very expressive for all their simplicity. This is a great series for elementary readers."

revolver:
"Themes of identity, loneliness, homelessness, heredity, of finding our place in life, our perceptions of our selves, of others -- basic ingredients of the human condition -- are explored in Revolver, the new ongoing comic book from Salgood Sam, also known as Canadian artist Max Douglas.
"A collection of short works and the first installments of longer ongoing stories by Salgood Sam with guest authors a.j.duric and John O'Brien, RevolveR is at times introspective, melancholic and hopeful in its pursuit of truth and understanding."

changing of the guard:
board shuffle at the cbldf:
"The Comic Book Legal Defense Fund elected new officers at its Board of Directors meeting at July's Comic-Con International. Founder Denis Kitchen retired from the Board, and will be replaced as President by Chris Staros, publisher of Top Shelf Productions. Milton Griepp was elected as the organization's new Treasurer, succeeding Frank Mangiaracina. Peter David, John Davis, Neil Gaiman, Frank Mangiaracina, Greg Ketter, and Louise Nemschoff were also re-elected to serve another term on the Board of Directors.
"Kitchen's retirement from the Board marks the end of an era for the Fund, which he founded 18 years ago. 'The challenges facing comics are different from when I founded the Fund,' Kitchen said. 'In the eighties, comics were still fighting for respectability and it was perhaps easier for them to be stigmatized as kid stuff. Two decades later, comics have attained a certain respectability, but are facing new sets of challenges. I think it's fitting that the generation directly facing these challenges, led by Chris Staros, a publisher after my own heart, should be the ones standing up to them.'
"Chris Staros recalls, 'Back in '97 I wrote Denis Kitchen to tell him that 'one day, when I've earned my place in comics, I'd love to serve on the CBLDF Board of Directors,' as I've always believed in the absolute importance of its mission. For two years I've had the pleasure of serving on the Board under Denis, and have witnessed first hand what an amazing asset he's been in defending the First Amendment rights of our industry. It'll be tough to fill the shoes of the founder of the Fund, but I'm honored to take over as President, and look forward to working with the entire community in this role.'"

show me the love:
jose villarrubia is interviewed over at themodernworld.com and discusses his collaboration with alan moore on the mirror of love recently released from top shelf.
"I have worn many hats in the art world. I began as a fine art painter (although I did a number of portrait commissions and worked in illustration and graphic design in my father’s advertising agency). I later moved to fine art photography, specializing in nudes. Later still I learned how to use the computer and after doing some fine art work, began my career in comics. I guess it sounds a bit pretentious, but I would have to describe myself as a multi-media artist. But I am truly not concerned with labels..."

much to do about nothing:
not sure why, but it looks like michael chabon's keynote speech at the eisner awards a few weeks back has started a stir on the comicsnet. it sounds like some are misinterpreting this as a strict call for kid-friendly superhero comics, when it's merely a call for more general comics aimed at kids. sure, he uses the silver-age superman as an example, but he also calls out harry potter and lemony snicket. of course we should have more comics for kids, just as we should have more comics aimed at adults and any other age group. the real question is not one of content, but distribution, especially since the direct market has never been a good outlet for reaching young audiences. perhaps publishers of american comics can learn from their manga peers who, btw, have been reaching both kids and teens for years now.

dave sim is your friend:
from neil gaiman's journal: "Dave Sim has made an extremely generous offer to readers of this journal (and indeed, to readers not of this journal, but just people who simply hear about his offer elsewhere on the Internet. Memes propagate, after all), which is the kind of offer that I found as interesting as he did. It's this:
"If you'd like to read one of the Sandman parody issues of Cerebus, Dave will send you one. He'll send it to you very happily, free of charge. He will sign it for you, too. And he won't charge you a thing. Not even postage..."

now i really feel like a slacker what with parker and lieber getting their san diego con report up before i'm even able to dump stills out of my picture phone. i suck.
"My luggage, like me, is overweight. The woman at the Alaska desk asks if I'm moving to San Diego. It's a fair question. I'm carrying more than your typical refugee. She's curious what I'm schlepping, and when I tell her it's comics, she recognizes me from a recent article in the Oregonian and offers to waive half the extra cost. It's hard not to feel all famous and confident, certain that the show will go well. Things return to normal when the metal-detector line almost makes me late for my flight..."

new review: the technopriests by jodorowsky, janjetov and beltran
"At times a farce, at times mind-bending science fiction, THE TECHNOPRIESTS is told in the same vein as Alexandro Jodorowsky's groundbreaking Metabarons series. Set in a distant future where the galaxy is governed by corporate conglomerates that sedate the people with virtual entertainment and consumerism, we're introduced to Albino, the Supreme TechnoPriest and leader of the order that produces the universe's interactive entertainments, and a man destined to eventually betray his gamemaking mission."

heidi mac says:
that alternative comics still needs help in an empathic plea in her new blog over at comicon called the beat.
meanwhile, publisher's weekly reviewed joel orff's waterwise this week available from -- synchronicity -- alternative comics this september:
"The cartoonist behind Strum and Drang: Great Moments in Rock 'n'Roll, Orff favors moments that are ripe with possibility. His first book-length narrative is a slight but charming evocation of such an instance, one that's particularly sweet. Jim and Emily are childhood friends who meet again, decades later, while on the rebound from breakups; they spend a day together hanging out on a lake, remembering playing in the water when they were younger, and a night at Emily’s cabin on its shore. The setup is for a romance (and Orff supplies plenty of moments where you'd expect them to fall into each other's arms or to rip off each other's clothes), but this isn't that kind of story -- it's a story about friendship and its particular intimacies, and the joys that people who've known each other forever can take in one another’s company."

ipc at dc:
only because we've got a lot of alan moore fans in these here parts, but it looks like alan (and leah!) are helping dc comics relaunch the ipc superhero universe. newsarama has the story.
"I think one of the things that seemed to appeal to Alan -- he was a big fan of that generation of characters, and now he's going to be able to have the chance to do the next generation's interpretation of them, along with the next generation of Alan Moore, literally," Wayne said. "So there's a nice symmetry on that. I've been a huge fan of Alan's comics since his Warrior days, and of another book by Alan, writing some classic characters -- I'm not tired of that yet."

over at lying in the gutters this week, rich johnston had some good words about my book.
"KILLING DEMONS by Peter Siegel and Brent White
"Okay now this is just scary. There have been a few horror books of late that have lived up to the name, here's another. Nasty. Someone give these guys Hellblazer when Mike Carey gets bored."

in addition to producing gutters each week, rich also writes the remarkably funny holed up! for avatar comics, available at finer retailers.
speaking of cbr, the second installment of fraction's the basement tapes column with joe casey was posted earlier today.
