The New York Times features Luc Sante's review of Marjane Satrapi's ''Persepolis 2," (Kel's review of the first book is here) in addition to this article about the heat-death of your daily page of funnies.

Apparently Alex Toth declined requests to participate in the new issue of The Comics Journal and... yeah, I dunno, then there was this thread on The Comics Journal Message Boards what becomes a discussion as to the wily ins and outs of how and why they can use what images they use within the magazine-- which, in this instance, includes Goodman Goes Playboy.
Which, you know, aside from the Wallace Wood Disney Cavalcade of Fuckin' might be, you know, worth running by a lawyer or something, I dunno. Not that TCJ didn't, I'm just sayin'. Hell of way to get the ball rolling, Dirk...
I've not had a chance to pick up the new issue yet, but hope to soon.
Oh, uh, at least 2 of them there links aren't work-safe, so, if you're dicking around at work and don't want to get busted for having a massive dwarf orgy on your screen, then don't click.

Pantheon announces its Graphic Novel slate for aught-five:
JANUARY Epileptic by David B. In the tradition of Art Spiegelman's Maus and Marjane Satrapi's Persepolis—David B.'s stunning graphic memoir about growing up with an epileptic brother.
FEBRUARY Gemma Bovery by Posy Simmonds A deliciously satiric graphic novel that updates the tragic story of literature's most famous adulteress.
APRIL The Acme Novelty Library by Chris Ware The genius behind Jimmy Corrigan ("arguably the greatest achievement of the form, ever." —Dave Eggers, New York Times) is back in a big way—literally—with a stunning tabloid-sized collection of single-page cartoons.
...and in the summer watch for Embroideries by Marjane Satrapi, Ice Haven by Daniel Clowes, and The Rabbi's Cat by Joann Sfar.

Ice Haven? As a single issue? Wonder if it'll be Ice Haven and Death Ray in a collection. I wonder why it's 4 in the morning and i'm blogging stuff. Hey, you don't have to click on that link, i just cut and pasted the whole thing anyway.

Comics blogger Sean Collins hangs up his hat, at least, in his words, "for the forseeable future." Which is a shame; while I can't say I agreed with him all the time (and, in fact, quite virulently disagreed with him from time to time), he's a sharp writer, with a clear voice, opinion, and point of view on things. His perspective and contribution to the blogoverse will be definitely missed.
(I have a feeling, based on his farewell post, that we'll hear from that crazy wrestler-- and I don't mean a postcard.)

How glad am I that Jeffery Rowland healed up good from that brown recluse bite and is back on the Wigu horse again?
Almost as glad as Chris Onstad's Achewood makes me. And his Achewood shirts:

One of my favorite finds* at SDCC this year was the output of Patrick Neighly's Mad Yak Press, who have churned out several high quality graphic novels like this one, THE SUPERNATURALISTS (i picked up a second copy of SUBATOMIC, and first copies of TEXARKANA and THE WIZARD, too). THE SUPERNATURALISTS, which wins the award for Second Best Title Ever**, is absolutely worth checking out.
Neighly's putting out these beautiful, fun slabs of genre trash. So check it out, yo.

* by "finds" i mean 'people you've probably already been reading forever but i'm a slow learner and am just now getting around to.'
** Steve Niles' "Guns, Drugs, and Monsters" is the first.

Kevin Melrose at Thoughtballoons posted this Times Article about a manga cafe that's opened in midtown NYC.
What, that's old news to you by now? Huh, is it, Mr. Clicky Internet Jerkwad? Alrigtht, fuck you then. Here, go look at Peter Beste's portfolio of Norwegian Black Metal Superstars. (Click on "enter portfolio" and it's right there.) My fave is Nattefrost-- you know, of the album BLOOD AND VOMIT-- covered in his own shit while sitting in what is clearly identified as HIS bathtub.

While you're waiting for the new issue of The Comics Journal to hit the stands this week (which, aside from having 36 pages of Alex Toth comics inside also marks the start of Dirk Deppey's tenure as Editor), why not whet your whistle at tothfans.com - The Official Alex Toth Website?

NEWSARAMA has a write-up of the Golden Apple signing by Reggie Hudlin and Aaron McGruder (pictured above with, uh, Gilbert Hernandez & family) for their excellent, excellent BIRTH OF A NATION gn that Kyle Baker drew.
I think Adi's doing that one up for the review section, but it'll have to wait unitl Peter Pilgrim gets home for the uploadin' and shit. In the meanwhile, though, man, you really should get and read this book.

 Animated FRANK. Dooooooood.
(In parts, it sounds like it's been scored by a SWORDFISHTROMBONES-era Tom Waits. And it's on METAFILTER so it's slow as shit at the moment, but, hey, bookmark it and check it later in the week. Because it's gorgeous.)
