artbomb review:
abe: wrong for all the right reasons
by glenn dakin

"Like any young adult buttoned against the wind and keeping a journal close by the bed, ABE: WRONG FOR ALL THE RIGHT REASONS is unapologetically self-absorbed, prone to wallow in moments of whimsy, and at all times values expressiveness over cold, hard reportage. A great achievement of ABE is that after reading it you don't want to kick Dakin in the face. Instead, the most likely reaction is a desire to read his book again right away, if not simply for the mood and pacing than for frequently pithy asides like this all-too-true description of fading adult friendships: "Worse than that, they're becoming polite."

"Dakin's greatest virtues are tone and perspective. He exhibits an adult's sensibility rather than an overgrown child's; one can feel the cold bite of an October breeze in just as many of the short stories in this collection as opportunities bask in the first sunny day of May. Because Dakin seems to be drawing on life experience, his smell-the-flowers values seem hard-won rather than justifications for ten more minutes of recess..."

from crumb to clowes...

The New Smithsonian Book of Comic Book Stories

"A panorama of some of the most creative and subversive art of our times, this one-of-a-kind anthology celebrates the artistry and insight of comic book art, graphic novels, and graphic journalism from the 1960s to the present. Classics such as R. Crumb's I Remember the Sixties, Stan Lee and Steve Ditko's Spider-Man saga "The Final Chapter" (from Spider-Man #33), and Dan Clowes's Caricature are featured, plus new sequences of work by Chris Ware and Ben Katchor created exclusively for this volume.

"Other sections include work by Gilbert Shelton and Paul Mavrides ("The Death of Fat Freddy"), Harvey Pekar and R. Crumb ("Jack the Bellboy and Mr. Boats"), Carol Tyler ("Labor"), Stan Lee and Jim Steranko ("The Strange Death of Captain America"), Stan Lee and Jack Kirby ("The Hate Monger"), Bob Kanigher and Joe Kubert ("Enemy Ace"), Will Eisner ("Izzy the Cockroach and the Meaning of Life"), Rick Geary ("Farewell to Charlie Chaplin"), Kaz ("Dream of the Pork Rinds Fiend"), Charles Burns ("Robot Love"), Gary Panter ("Jimbo"), Art Spigelman ("The Honeymoon" from Maus), Frank Miller with Klaus Janson and Lynn Varley ("Born Again" from Daredevil), Alan Moore and Dave Gibbons ("Dr. Manhattan" from Watchmen), Neil Gaiman with Charles Vess and Malcolm Jones III ("A Midsummer Night's Dream" from The Sandman), Joe Sacco ("Hebron"), Jaime Hernandez ("Locos"), Gilbert Hernandez ("Pipo"), Dori Seda ("The Do-Nothing Decade"), Eddie Campbell ("Nobody Left at the Café Guerbois"), and more. The book is divided into four main galleries: Underground Comics, Silver Age Super Heroes, A Raw Generation, and Dark Fiction and Deep Fantasy, and includes a special supplement of four-color work by Lynda Barry and others as well. In his lively introduction Bob Callahan celebrates the achievements of American comic book art from the late 1930s to the present. An indispensible collection. 100 color, 300 b/w illustrations."

bilal takes toronto:

Wednesday, October 27th, 2004
@The Beguiling, 601 Markham Street

"The Beguiling is very proud to announce the appearance of a second superstar European creator signing this year. Wednesday October 27th will see the first-ever in-store appearance of renowned graphic album writer and artist (and now filmmaker!) Enki Bilal! Known in North America for his work with the Humanoids group, including the spectacular NIKOPOL TRIOLGY and BLACK ORDER BRIGADE graphic albums, as well as the new DC Comics/Humanoids editions of TOWNSCAPES and THE BEAST TRILOGY, Bilal is in Toronto promoting the premiere of his new film "The Immortal". A huge success in Europe, "The Immortal" (French title: "Immortel") adapts segments of the NIKOPOL stories to the big screen, with some truly stunning visuals.

"Several things are happening with regards to Bilal's Toronto visit, so please read the following very closely.

"1. The Beguiling is going to have a draw to give away tickets to an exclusive screening of "The Immortal" at The Varsity's VIP Cinema, with Bilal in attendance! This prize has been generously donated by ODEON FILMS. Ballots will be available at The Beguiling beginning this weekend, and the time and date of the screening is set to follow.

"2. The Beguiling is proud to present a very rare chance to meet the noted creator Enki Bilal at the store on Wednesday, October 27th, 2004. We do not currently know the time that Bilal will be present at the store, but because of the time-sensitive nature of this event we wanted to make you aware that it was happening, so you could plan to, say, take the entire day off to prepare. Details will follow on the exact time via The Beguiling's mailing list, but also pay attention to http://www.torontocomics.com as well as the frontpage at http://www.beguiling.com.

"This is the kind of comics event that really only happens once in a lifetime. Don't miss out!"

where have all the political cartoonists gone?

"As CBS News Correspondent Anthony Mason reports, more and more cartoonists like Anderson are finding newspapers are erasing their jobs. The number of staff cartoonist positions at American papers has been cut from 150 to just 80 in little more than a decade.

"What's making the editorial cartoonist an endangered species?

"Well, there are fewer newspapers than there used to be, and newsprint costs more than it used to. But, in some cases, political cartoonists have become, well, too political..."

[meanwhile, stalin's political cartoonist, boris yefimov, is still hard at work at the the age of 104...]

thank you, sir. may i have another?

New Yorker magazine charts cartoon course in U.S. history

"What is the sound of one hand clapping? Not even a Zen master may say - but The Complete Cartoons of The New Yorker is the sound of several dozen ink-stained wretches having the last laugh.

"Let's face it: Cartoonists are maligned, comic books are stigmatized, the pen-and-ink drawing isn't really 'art' - although lately this all has been changing. Among other developments, the 'graphic novel' has gained recognition, collections of comics and cartoons do well with book buyers, and younger U.S. denizens are delighting in 'manga,' the Japanese take on sequential art.

"Still, ask your average person whether it's better to learn about the 20th century from a history text or a book of 'toons, and most folks will choose the former (even if they're just trying to impress you).

"The Complete Cartoons of The New Yorker, though, makes a strong case that our best cartoonists have captured the modern age. If aliens touch down on the planet tomorrow, give them this book as a cultural crash course..."
