Uzumaki vol. 2

Credits: Written and Illustrated by Junji Ito
Publisher: Viz

Kirie knows there's something wrong in the pregnancy ward of the hospital. The expecting mothers have been attacked by swarms of mosquitoes. Someone's slaying other patients in the hospital. The newborns are a little too perfect, too intelligent.

And they're demanding to be sown back into the wombs of their mothers...

The few horror comics that exist on this side of the Pacific haven't caught up to the sheer terror and insanity of their Japanese brethren. Most are mired in the conventional trappings of vampire and ghost lure or the dubious influence of horror-comedy. Some of them execute well enough to make for sound entertainment, but they don't really get under your skin. They don't stick with you as you take a shower and go about your day and try to swallow food without the fear that it might attack you from the inside.

Junji Ito is the best horror storytelling working in comics today and UZUMAKI is his three-volume masterpiece. He's taken a simple construct - the spiral - and transformed it into the physical embodiment of horror. Snail shells, staircases, umbilical cords; anything with a spiral shape can and will terrorize the poor inhabitants of Kurozu-cho as Kirie tries to unravel its secret. The result is horror comics that'll make the skin jump right off your body as you try to sleep at night.
