Garlands of Moonlight

Credits: Written by Jai Sen and Illustrated by Rizky Wasisto Edi
Publisher: Shoto Press

In a remote Malay village on the verge of being colonized by the Dutch, something is preying upon mothers and abducting their newborn children. With one foot in the past and the other in the future, the villagers aren't sure whether they're facing a wild animal or something far, far more supernatural...

GARLANDS OF MOONLIGHT combines all of my favorite reading subjects into one of the best debut books from a freshmen creative team and new publisher that I've ever seen. Blending historical fiction with horror and mythology, Jai Sen has crafted an intricate story that seamlessly incorporates a lot of different themes, while at the same time never encumbering it. Indonesian artist, Rizky Wasisto Edi, skillfully employs an art style that invokes face value comparisons to Japanese manga, but utilizes much more Western panel compositions and layouts. If that combination hasn't caught your attention, GARLANDS is printed with an additional silver ink to give the book an ominous and entirely distinctive tone - something else I've never seen before.

During a tumultuous time in the comics industry, it's always encouraging to discover a newcomer to the field that is producing both highly original and highly diverse content. And clocking in at eighty-six pages for less than five bucks, GARLANDS OF MOONLIGHT is a geniune steal that I hope you take advantage of.
