Ghost World

Credits: Written and Illustrated by Daniel Clowes
Publisher: Fantagraphics Books

When you've lived your life in a post-ironic, post-sincere womb of the bathetic and superficial, what are you supposed to do when you find yourself actually wanting something?

Enid Coleslaw, the anagramically-addled focal point of GHOST WORLD seems to be having that very problem. After a lifetime of prefabricated suburban banality, Enid finds herself out of high school and almost into college, even if trying to go continue her education means abandoning her best friend Becky and (much worse) admitting to a desire for something Better, let alone something Worthwhile.

What begins as a dreamy, lilting tour across girly suburbanite boredom (and all the requisite escapades therein, cruel and absurd alternately) achieves a lucid, poignant clarity as Enid refuses to become yet another fixture in a life and a town she's spent her years mocking relentlessly. One part coming of age story and one part almost love story, GHOST WORLD surprises with its sincere heart swaddled in scorn and derision.
