The Blue Notebook

Credits: Written and Illustrated by Andre Juillard
Publisher: NBM

If I lived next to elevated train tracks and didn't have curtains, and I happened to be walking by my window after a shower just as a train was going by, and if a stranger happened to catch a glimpse of my form clad in only dew and perfume, and if that stranger was so moved by the sight as to find my apartment and confess his transgression and ask me out, and if, after I declined his invitation, that stranger commenced to wooing me with pleading calls and letters declaring his devotion, I would probably call the police.

This is because I am not French.

If I were French - if I were, say, a Frenchwoman in Andre Juillard's THE BLUE NOTEBOOK, I would have a much better haircut than I do and I would agree to have dinner with the cheeky stranger. We'd eat, he'd walk me home, we'd fall into bed, there would be bare breasts and smoking and soon after he'd jet off to Brazil on mysterious business. While he was away I'd take up with a handsome rogue that I met at the symphony. My cheeky stranger would return, we'd fight, the Symphony Rogue would call at just the wrong moment... someone would have to die.

I am not French. I live in the Midwest and I take pictures of my cats. I can, however, brew strong coffee, put on my Betty Blue soundtrack and sit on the balcony with Juillard's beautiful book of bare breasts and smoking in bed and damn if I don't feel a little French for a moment. It's sexy, I like it.

Now, if only I had a better haircut.
