Dear Julia,

Credits: Written and Illustrated by Brian Biggs
Publisher: Top Shelf

Boyd Solomon is preparing to take flight: away from his life, away from the strange little man with the bag of photographs and the head full of uncomfortable questions. Boyd is perched outside of his eight-floor window with a pair of makeshift wings strapped to his back. DEAR JULIA, is the story of who he is, how he got there, and just what the hell exactly he's planning on doing now that he's out there.

A lovely little book to be read as brisk or as thoughtful as the reader chooses, DEAR JULIA, author Brian Biggs lets his tale unfold across time and place, never tipping his hand as a writer nor overplaying his simple, yet ornate style to transmit any superfluous information. It's lovingly rendered with exquisitely controlled pen and line work in a style both nostalgic and modern, and Biggs writes like a comics combination of Raymond Carver and Jonathan Carroll.

From the play on words inherent in Boyd Solomon's name to its Poloroid-esque presentation in square panels, DEAR JULIA,'s novelistic sophistication and richness, combined with its gorgeous illustrations create a smart, memorable, and all too rare kind of comic.
