Commentary

I try really hard not to favor books that have female protagonists. I fear it's sexist of me. Somehow worse than sexist, it's PREDICTABLE. I try really hard not to be predictable. I try really, really hard. And I fail. In the case of WHITEOUT, though, it's just not my fault. U.S. Marshall Carrie Stetko was written for me to love. I'm convinced of it. She's the tiniest bit frumpy, she's smart, ill tempered and she plays with guns. What's not to love? She's cool.

See there? I made a funny. She's not only cool, she's COLD. She's cold because she's stationed in ANT-friggin-ARCTICA and she's got to solve a murder in the middle of a blizzard so blinding they call it a "whiteout." Plus, her boss is a dick and some lithe and lovely British spook is poking her nose around in Carrie's investigation. It's not in my or Carrie's nature to trust lithe and lovely British spooks. So we both decided to keep an eye on her early out. (And it's not because we're jealous either, so you can just shut up.)

WHITEOUT's well researched, well written and expertly rendered. Don't buy it for those reasons, though. Buy it because Carrie Stetko's mouthy, freckled and cool, and because Frank Miller's cover art shivers me timbers. Whatever timbers are, mine are shivering.
