New York City is equally inspiring as it is frustrating; and if you're too young and stupid not to be intimated, then there's simply no place better to be in the world. Leela Corman's SUBWAY SERIES is about growing up in the Big City, and all the opportunities and pitfalls that come bundled with it; a slice of life that's provocative at times, but spot on to those who have dwelled there.
SUBWAY SERIES follows Tina, a confused young woman frustrated with her college boyfriend and her pretentious friends and totally infatuated with her guitar instructor. Lost, confused, and trapped by her own impotence, her story becomes the backdrop for a cast of colorful and dazed characters that bob up and down in a sea of drugs and parties and unsatisfying sex.
Leela Corman's characters -- with all their curves and sharp edges -- are so visually distinctive that her design choices become simply captivating. Setting and fashion become characters in her hands, albeit at the expense of the narrative at times, but not in a way that's overly unwelcome. An exercise in atmosphere and style, SUBWAY SERIES makes for an aspiring effort from a bright new voice in comics.
