Andi Watson's BREAKFAST AFTER NOON is a slice of life that cuts to the quick, as we witness Rob and Louise, and their future as husband and wife, rent asunder by unexpected unemployment and the last vestiges of youth fighting on in spite of where the first vestiges of adulthood wish to go. While it may be a familiar story, Watson's characters and knack for detail elevates this book beyond this kind of story's usual trappings.

Watson's brushwork looks like something out of a bygone era, too, somewhere in-between Seth and... and I don't know, Peter Arno; somehow both elegant and charming in the same stroke without feeling affected or trite. A small look into lives so real it very nearly embarrasses as you see yourself and your life in its pages, BREAKFAST AFTER NOON is a quiet little marvel, and one that comics are sorely lacking.
