Commentary

KING is a controversial biography of the famous civil rights leader, Martin Luther King, Jr., that was over ten years in the making. Began when he was a young man, author Ho Che Anderson brings an energetic, fresh eye to the material that delves deeply into the life of a historic figure, while not afraid to examine many of the issues that trouble the African-American community today. Anderson isn't looking for facts and figures here; he's looking to answer many of the questions behind why things are the way they are and why they continue to be.

Told in three parts, each chapter takes a look at a different period in the life of King, while cutting back-and-forth from the present day. Utilizing a mixture of black & white and color comics, peppered with an array of art styles and mixed media, KING contains a unique visual experience that's just as stimulating at times as the narrative itself. It's simply an intriguing, new look at what some might otherwise find to be well-traveled material.

But in Anderson's hands, it's completely alive and visceral.
