Hate: Buddy the Dreamer (vol. 2)

Credits: Written and Illustrated by Peter Bagge
Publisher: Fantagraphics Books

BUDDY THE DREAMER is the second HATE collection. Steeped in the grunge world of early-90's Seattle, it finds Buddy, Stinky, Lisa and all the rest slacking and slumming from shitty party to shitty show before heading back to a shitty apartment for more shitty sex with your shitty girlfriend.

Ahh, memories!

What is quite possibly the funniest comic ever published, HATE really finds its footing here as Bagge plunges head on into the neuroses and hang-ups, fuck ups and break ups of all his cast as they continue to slouch towards responsibility and adulthood in general. Stinky finds himself an erstwhile Iggy Pop for the Whatever generation and Buddy stumbles assbackwards into managing his best friend's band, Leonard and the Love Gods. And if you've ever been in a band, their adventures on tour will make you flinch, blush, and hang your head in shame - when you're not laughing out loud, at least.

The Love Gods, a barely coherent batch of Cro-Magnon RAWKers, are all named Kurt.

Bagge has tons of little throwaway gems like that on every page. Just a bit older and a bit wiser than his characters, Bagge has an unsentimental detachment to his bygone youth, portraying it with just enough honesty and sympathy to somehow make it all right.
