LOVE AND ROCKETS came to an ostensible end in 1996, the Hernandez brothers went their separate ways for a while and launched series of experimental shorts and longer form Palomar and Mechanix tales as well (Luba for Gilbert; Penny Century for Jaime, respectively), doing what they'd done all along only without doing it between the covers of the book that made their names.
FEAR OF COMICS is a collection of Gilbert's experimental shorts from his New Love series and a few other places (Zero Zero and Hate amongst them) and is a surreal, dreamy blast of ideas and energy, functioning as exercises in pure idea and vigor more than anything else. One gets the impression that Gilbert's primary audience and critic in these pages is himself. Courageous and inventive, FEAR OF COMICS is a glorious mess of manic creativity by one of comic's most daring masters.
