Black & White vol. 2

Credits: Written and Illustrated by Taiyo Matsumoto
Publisher: Viz

The thing about BLACK & WHITE as a novel is that the book is so much goddamn fun - it's easy to forget that there's an actual story happening here, actual emotional undercurrents affecting our characters. Under intense internal and external pressures as their home is slipping away from their control, Black is becoming more... black, and White more white. Sinister viciousness creeps into Black as he looses patience more and more often with White, who's busy becoming dreamier and wonkier as all the forces around them continue to conspire against them.

Their partnership is more than just a partnership; these twin shamans need one another as much as their home needs them. As White puts it, Black is "...missing lots of screws. Heart screws... But White has screws for the parts Black doesn't. White has them all..." and it's the unity between the boys that is put under fire here in Volume 2.

Matsumoto continues with his breathless and manic style. While certainly an acquired taste, visually, his energy and affection for his characters resonates here as he puts their hearts and heads through the ultimate test: can they live without one another?
