Son of the Gun: Sinner (vol. 1)

Credits: Written by Alexandro Jodorowsky and Illustrated by Georges Bess
Publisher: Humanoids (DC)

Commentary

Recalling Jodorowsky's seminal surrealist opus El Topo, this gorgeously-rendered graphic album seems almost a variation on what must be familiar ground for Jodo by now: a tail-addled baby is discovered in a trash pile by a cross-dressing dwarf prostitute; he sups on a dog's teet and is weaned with the barrel of a gun. Later, he becomes a rape-spree prone violence junky, a postmodern Jesse James thug who begins a strange ascent through an urban crime network interweaves with political power. Oh, and the book begins with our antihero being crucified some time in the future, dying for the sins of his people, and the tale we are told is his recollection of his life as he dies on the cross.

No, really.

There's nothing else I can tell you about SON OF THE GUN, really. Either you made it through that first paragraph and you're thinking Hell yeah, or you're wondering if I'm fucking with you and, if I'm not, then what kind of a sick and twisted mental case would enjoy such a thing?

Me. I have enjoyed such a thing.

SON OF THE GUN is a blistering and profane... something. It defies genre and description, flies in the face of convention and political correctness. This is either a book dense with biblical metaphor and mythological symbolism by a grand master of surrealist parable or it's the amoral and tasteless venting of a misogynistic sociopath. I can think of no higher compliment.
