The monkeys yell SKRONK! And fight with sticks and coconuts! The robots CLANK CLANK CLANK CLANK and fight with iron fists! This is the battle of the century. Past vs. Future. Nature vs. Technology.
Monkey vs. Robot.
I have no idea if James Kochalka was planning to invade comics pop culture with this book or not, but he definitely has struck a chord that has propelled it beyond the reach of most indy books. Since its publication a few years ago, MONKEY VS ROBOT has already achieved a bit of cult status, and has, quite deservingly, put Kochalka very much in demand.
James Kochalka is a cartoonist's cartoonist. He's able to convey so much with the simplest of brush strokes. MONKEY VS ROBOT is an expressive, funny-sad book that rewards us with its deft execution. We may have seen the themes explored here countless times before, but never so succinctly and clever. This is a timeless book that left me with one parting thought...
Monkeys sure are tough little buggers.
