Commentary

The bad guy calls himself The Gipper. He has a Ronald Reagan mask bonded to his face. He has young boys in sailor suits chained to his ankles. He can deploy them as suicide bombers in a moment's notice.

Welcome to Rick Remender's world.

From Captain Dingleberry to Black Heart Billy and his contributions to Kieron Dwyer's Lowest Common Denominator, Remender has established himself as one of today's more controversial humorists. With DOLL AND CREATURE, he blends the high octane action of the Die Hard films with his knack for political and social satire to create his most ambitious and unusual graphic novel to date.

DOLL AND CREATURE is set in a future where morality and decency have been thrown out the window, spurned on by a designer drug called Grey Matter that turns its users into horrible monsters known as "Hydes". To combat the menace, a mancreature known as Gristle is created with the mission of destroying all Grey Matter dealers and their incurable drug users. Along the way, he befriends a young woman nicknamed Doll, who has been ostracized by a society that no longer values her strikingly good looks.

And then there's that Gipper...

Remender is joined by the art team of John Heebink and Mike Manley, who combine to deliver a story that could easily be torn out of a nineteen seventies horror mag - gray tones and all the perfect compliment to Remender's pulp fiction monster romp. I'm hard pressed to think of a better fusion of guns, monsters and lunacy, and after reading DOLL AND CREATURE, I don't think I'll try.
