In A DOLL'S HOUSE, the second collection of Gaiman's SANDMAN series, Morpheus attempts to recapture four escapee dreams, and to close the vortex whose existence could cause the world to collapse upon itself. Herein we meet Rose Walker and three more of the Endless: Dream's older sister, Death, and the twins, Desire and Despair. The characterization of Death as a little goth chick with a joie de vivre not generally found in a clique who are morose by definition, is a stroke of genius.
The real prize here, though, is "Collectors," a short story that explores what might happen if serial killers were to host a convention. The resulting trade show for homicidal sadists is horrific, hysterical and terrifyingly banal.
