Vagabond vol. 1

Credits: Written and Illustrated by Takehito Inoue
Publisher: Viz

Musashi Miyamoto is considered the greatest samurai who ever lived. He fought and won over 60 duels, and, believe me, the losers did not walk away from those duels. Musashi was a Zen Buddhist who believed in finding Enlightenment through the path of Martial Arts. He was the first Eastern swordsman to invent the technique of fighting with two swords, one in each hand. He also became a talented painter and an expert at woodcarving and metal-crafting. He wrote The Book of Five Rings, the key text in Samurai strategy, in his twilight years before dying peacefully.

VAGABOND is the latest comics adaptation of Musashi Miyamoto's life story, adapted from the original novel by Eiji Yoshikawa. Meticulously researched and beautifully illustrated in a naturalistic style, VAGABOND begins with 17 year-old Tekezo Shenmen shortly after he survived the Battle of Sekigahara and has become a fugitive. Tekezo is a cold-eyed killer out to make a name for himself as a warrior, and the series will follow his progress as he comes to awareness under the tutelage of a Zen monk and becomes the nomadic samurai Musashi Miyamoto, embarking on his path to find Enlightenment through combat and the edge of Death, having to choose between ruthless self-reliance and the love of the women who sought to corrupt or redeem him.

VAGABOND is currently the most popular comic series in Asia. It takes a classic story and makes it new and relevant for readers discovering it for the first time. It's a story about finding yourself and your own way in a chaotic world and not wavering.
