Commentary

Jim Ottaviani is a former nuclear engineer who now writes historical science comics while working as a librarian in Michigan. He also happens to be one of the most distinctive voices working in American comics today.

FALLOUT is Ottaviani's first full-length graphic novel, following on the heels of his previous anthologies, Two-Fisted Science and Dignifying Science. It is a completely compelling history of The Manhattan Project, focusing on Leo Szilard and J. Robert Oppenheimer, two of the more important and controversial figures in the development of the atomic bomb.

This is a book about men dedicated to peace using science to create weapons in order to win a world war. The ironies and intrigues here are endless and, to Ottaviani's credit, he's able to capture them in a way that is both entertaining and informative, a rare feat in any medium, let alone comics. He's also assisted by an all-star team of artists who contribute their talents to different chapters in this two-hundred plus page graphic novel. The end result is an entirely unique experience that you're not going to find anywhere else in today's marketplace.

If we're ever going to achieve lasting diversity in the comics medium, we're going to need more Jim Ottaviani's.
