Hellboy:
The Chained Coffin and Others (vol. 3)

Credits: Written and Illustrated by Mike Mignola
Publisher: Dark Horse Comics

Commentary

I've been on a HELLBOY kick lately - I suppose one can never get enough of a big red demon beating the crap out of X-Files with a giant stone hand, and THE CHAINED COFFIN AND OTHERS surely doesn't disappoint on that front. The third and most eclectic volume in this series by Mike Mignola collects a bunch of the shorter HELLBOY stories that have appeared over the years under a single roof.

Almost Colossus, the direct sequel to the last volume, Wake the Devil, is here, which ties up some of the loose ends concerning Roger the Homunculus and other members of HELLBOY's ever growing stable of characters. The Wolves of St. August is also here, an early werewolf tale that remains one of my favorite HELLBOY stories to date. The Baba Yaga, a new piece made especially for this volume is here as well, along with at least three or four other stories.

With running commentary by Mignola, THE CHAINED COFFIN reads kind of like a DVD special edition of HELLBOY, jam-packed with all the spooky adventure and thrills that we've come to expect from it.
