Hate: Buddy Bites the Bullet! (vol. 6)

Credits: Written and Illustrated by Peter Bagge
Publisher: Fantagraphics Books

Commentary

Can I admit that I was sad - genuinely, sincerely sad - that HATE came to an end? The last few years or so had seen Bagge expanding the format into a substantial little comic, with a motley collection of comics and columns, record and zine reviews in the back of the book after the main course, the continuing adventures of Buddy and Lisa. It was always a banner fucking day when HATE came out, and I'd barricade myself away from the world for an hour or so to just pore over it.

And here was where the ride came to a stop, more or less. Buddy and Lisa, together (or trying, anyway) as Buddy actually is making a go of it with his own business and Lisa tries desperately to get her shit together as well. Of course it's weird, googly sex like only Bagge can draw (who'd have thought squiggles and curls could be sexual?) that brings the couple back together and - dare I say it? - love that keeps them there. That's right, gang: our Buddy ties the knot.

HATE had never, ever been better or funnier as it was when it ended. Even if you've not followed Buddy and Lisa all the way to their ends, BUDDY BITES THE BULLET! stands as an almost-sweet slice of life portrayal of two kids coming together and starting their lives together. Even if they get hitched because Buddy gets Lisa knocked up.
