Kill Your Boyfriend

Credits: Written by Grant Morrison and Illustrated by Philip Bond and D'Israeli
Publisher: Vertigo (DC)

I have such a fucking crush on this book. It's embarrassing, really; the depth and complexity of my juvenile obsession with KILL YOUR BOYFRIEND is the kind of thing reserved for pop bands by 12 year old girls, and you really can't talk about unless it's to total strangers on the Internet (save for writing our names on my notebook when no one else is looking). So now then: Me + KYB = HA HA HA.

Morrison and Bond have crafted here what would later be dubbed a pop comic: Slim and fast, KILL YOUR BOYFRIEND is perfectly teenaged pop perfection, equal parts glam and bang, sex and violence, whimsy and menace. The story is Badlands updated with a fin de sciele dread and excitement: A young girl, knowing where her thoroughly middle-class upbringing is leading her, unites with a young troublemaker. They kill her boyfriend, and roam the English countryside as E-fueled Bonnie-and-Clydes. Fucking and stomping their way through the invalid and pretentious, the content and the fattened, our heroes hurl themselves towards tomorrow with a crisp, raw energy that's simultaneously nostalgic and totally new. KILL YOUR BOYFRIEND is someone's perfect first comic.

Bond's art is edible, practically; his poppy, cartoony imagery begs to be peeled off of the page by your teeth as Morrison takes us back through that One Summer we all had, back when everything was beautiful and nothing hurt. KILL YOUR BOYFRIEND is as perfect as finding a mix-tape you made on your 17th birthday, and just as vibrant. Read it before you're too old to remember how it's supposed to feel.
