Scene of the Crime

Credits: Written by Ed Brubaker and Illustrated by Michael Lark and Sean Phillips
Publisher: Vertigo (DC)

Lovers of damaged detectives, followers of Ross Macdonald and Lawrence Block, those of you who prefer your heroes ever-so-slightly "anti": SCENE OF THE CRIME is gunning for a spot on your bedside table.

Our dick on the scene is one Jack Herriman, ex-junkie, son of a dead cop and general fuck-up, perpetually trying to turn his life around. Enter Paul Raymonds, Jack's dad's partner - the one Pop took a metaphorical bullet for, the one who cost Jack his eye. Raymonds has a case he wants Jack to take. It's a simple missing person; should be easy money, right? Yeah, right. It would've been, if the missing woman hadn't been just Jack's type and if she hadn't turned up dead within hours of their meeting. Now Jack's pissed. He wants answers and a stiff drink, and answers are hard to come by.

SCENE OF THE CRIME's artwork is like the best kind of Raymond Chandler dame: it looks pretty, does its job and doesn't call attention to itself. And if they give awards to colorists, I hope James Sinclair has a big mantel.
