Commentary

DUMPED's central metaphor is junk. Debs, whom we meet in the midst of a drunken rage, runs a vintage clothing shop. Binny, whom we meet meeting Debs in the midst of her drunken rage, is a bibliophile obsessed with tracking down old books that have been written in by their previous owners. And, as one man's trash is another's hoary old chestnut, Debs and Binny are people who revel in salvaging and cherishing a hard-found damaged good if for no other reason than it takes one to know one.

Their one-night stand slouches awkwardly towards a relationship and DUMPED eavesdrops softly on the lives of these two likable fuckups as they tell themselves that they're more grown-up than they actually are. Debs hasn't quite cut all the dissonant chords to her previous relationship and Binny hasn't quite come all the way out of his basement library. In the hands of a lesser cartoonist, Debs and Binny would come off as shallow, pusillanimous little twits; Watson elevates both them and DUMPED into a caring sketch of young lovers damaged and eager to be fixed.
