Eddie Campbell is all growed up.

AFTER THE SNOOTER finds Campbell, and his now-all-but-abandoned nom de plume Alec MacGarry, wading through the beginnings of middle age and he's not happy about it one bit, no sir. He anthropomorphizes all his anxieties in the form of the wily Snooter, a curly-nosed bug that's all Eddie's fears made real. The Snooter tells him to stop drinking. The Snooter makes Eddie worry about the cancer. The Snooter gives you the screamin' mimis and the creepin' angst. The Snooter stalks, pokes, probes, and prods our Eddie as he tries to live his life, to raise his kids and to run his publishing empire out of his front room as sanely and soundly as is possible. The Snooter ruins EVERYTHING.

When viewed in relation with Campbell's other autobio works to date (The King Canute Crowd, Three Piece Suit, and How To Be An Artist, all stand-alone works that form parts of a greater whole), SNOOTER feels like a kind of wrap-up, the end of the first half of a life chronicled across panels and gutters. Campbell re-examines his life and revisits old friends; as he tours around the world we feel that we've come full circle with him.

There's such a wealth of humanity on these pages you can't help but feel as if you know Eddie Campbell. I can't think of any higher compliment to pay.
