I hate the word "epic". It comes from the Latin epicus, which was meant to imply something that went beyond the typical scope of things. Nowadays it seems like whenever a movie runs over two and a half hours, it's an "epic". Rest assured, A DISTANT SOIL is an epic. And nothing exists quite like it in comics.
For as long as she's been able to publish, Colleen Doran has been rewarding us with A DISTANT SOIL. (It's actually longer than that since many of the characters date back to her youth.) And, while she's carved her place as one of the industry's finest talents, having produced work for nearly every major publisher, A DISTANT SOIL has always been her passion. THE GATHERING is the first part in the ADS saga, and collects the series' formative chapters.
At the heart of it, ADS is about two siblings, Liana and Jason, who are the children of a fallen alien freedom fighter. One possesses the power of The Avatar, the ruling force of the powerful Ovanan empire, while the other may very well be able to destroy it. Both are hounded by the Ovanans and have taken refuge with a resistance cell led by the charismatic Rieken. What Liana and Jason and their newfound friends don't know is that Rieken is actually The Avatar himself, which sets the stage for the interpersonal intrigue and betrayal that ADS has become legendary for.
If you're looking for a true epic, look no further than A DISTANT SOIL.
