Dropsie Avenue: The Neighborhood

Credits: Written and Illustrated by Will Eisner
Publisher: DC Comics

Commentary

There's a scene in DROPSIE AVENUE: THE NEIGHBORHOOD where this Hispanic woman is duped by her husband into believing that he's been transformed into a dog so that he can escape her and flee to San Juan without her knowing any better. Well, the plan works and, years later, when the dog kicks the bucket, the woman insists that the local Catholic priest grant it last rites. Convinced that the woman is absolutely nuts, the priest refuses and has her taken away. But when the neighbors catch wind of the story, the part about the dog doesn't make it, and they believe the priest - an Italian - turned the woman down on the basis of her ethnicity. A race riot breaks out, shops are destroyed, and the Italians begin their exodus from the neighborhood.

Not the punch line you're looking for, huh?

Well, welcome to DROPSIE AVENUE, an absolutely brilliant graphic novel from Will Eisner that traces over a century of change in a South Bronx community. Within its pages, you'll experience dozens of anecdotes like the one above. You see, Eisner has been around awhile. He's a smart guy - he knows what drives our cities. And, unlike many from The Greatest Generation, he hasn't lost that fire in his belly. He's not afraid to love, and he's not afraid to hate. And it's all on display in DROPSIE AVENUE.
