All of the threads previously woven by Eddie Campbell and Co., both narratively and artistically, come together in EARTH, WATER, AIR AND FIRE, the fifth book in the BACCHUS series. For the first time, Campbell's new gods - the salt-of-the-earth Bacchus, the tragic Theseus, and the comical Eyeball Kid - unite in one place to settle old scores and face common enemies.
More importantly, though, EARTH, WATER, AIR AND FIRE is a successful synthesis of the styles employed in previous volumes - combining the surreal action elements of the first books, with the rich narrative of Doing the Islands with Bacchus. Campbell also returns to the art chores, marking his first solo effort on a full-length BACCHUS adventure since the first volume.
The result is one of the stronger books in this series, weaving ancient Grecian mythology into the political and criminal machinations of present day Sicily - a bitter sweet tragedy for the modern age.
