Commentary

Somewhere in-between the urbane pop-hipsterism of ATOMIC CITY TALES and the sweet and funny for all ages JETCAT CLUBHOUSE sits, fidgeting impatiently in its too-small booster chair, Jay Stephens' LAND OF NOD TREASURY. For all of its strange growing pains, here Stephens is honing his gag-craft to a fun, loopy sort of science across its pages that he'll later unleash in all of his works with a grace and control eschewed here for a constant kind of one-upmanship.

There's not a plot so much in THE LAND OF NOD TREASURY as there's a lattice of interweaving characters and motivations. The whole thing adheres to an internal sensibility that tends to redefine itself from page to page, panel to panel, taking the reader along on its free-associative whims. It's a bit like Felix the Cat and the Disney stable all up and visited the old Harvey Comics characters, but on their way to Casper's place they got really good and high on some Angel Dust.

Breaking the rules and sprawling across its own manically surreal logic, THE LAND OF NOD TREASURY is a strange little book that showcases a creator flexing each and every one of his muscles, some if for no other reason than to know he needn't flex them again.
