La Mouche

Credits: Written and Illustrated by Lewis Trondheim
Publisher: Seuil

Commentary

Lewis Trondheim's LA MOUCHE is the best of the wordless comics breed, an instant classic when it first appeared nearly a decade ago. As the French title implies, it follows the life of a common household fly as it hatches from its egg and embarks on a journey of self-discovery, befriending and challenging a host of other insects along the way. LA MOUCHE is whimsical, funny and surprisingly dense - nearly nine hundred panels spread over a hundred pages.

Trondheim himself is one of the most prolific cartoonists working in France today, having published three-dozen works over the last decade in a wide array of genres. He's also one of the co-founders of L'Association, an aggressive publishing initiative aimed at expanding the scope and depth of French comics on both sides of the Atlantic. LA MOUCHE may be his finest work, certainly the best I've been exposed to.

It's a breath of fresh air on an otherwise muggy day.
