The Hollow Grounds: NogegoN

Credits: Written by Luc Schuiten and Illustrated by Francois Schuiten
Publisher: Humanoids Publishing

I don't know if I've read a graphic novel as brilliantly architected as NOGEGON. As the name might suggest, the first and second half of the book are symmetric opposites. And not just in panel layout, but in story as well (which is something that can only be seen to be believed). And the entire book actually makes sense. There's really only one conclusion you can reach when you read NOGEGON - The Schuitens are obviously mad.

NOGEGON is the story of Nelle, an off-worlder who has travelled to the planet of NogegoN in search of a missing friend. Unfortunately, entry to the planet isn't that easy - everything in NogegoN society is perfectly balanced, and they don't like surprises. So when Nelle illegally penetrates the planet and finds that her friend, Olive, has been driven to suicide, she struggles against the system to reconstruct the events leading up to her death. But will she find the answers she's looking for or is she bound to follow Olive's fate...

NOGEGON is one volume in a series of self-contained graphic novels that make up THE HOLLOW GROUNDS. And while each one offers the reader a novel experience into an alien culture, NOGEGON is truly The Schuitens at the top of their game.
