When Brian Wood, the creator of the politically charged sci-fi graphic novel, Channel Zero, and Steve Rolston, the artist of the spy-thriller Queen & Country, decided to collaborate on POUNDED, the very last thing in the world I was expecting was a romantic comedy.

(Now, I should preface all this by saying that there are romantic comedies and then there are romantic comedies. POUNDED is more like that scene in High Fidelity where a jealous John Cusack envisions his angry record store clerk slamming Tim Robbins in the face with an air conditioner. It's that kind of romantic comedy.)

POUNDED follows the misadventures of Heavy Parker, an arrogant, confused, but roguishly charming punk rocker from Vancouver. He's torn between maintaining his image and doing the right thing, which woefully crashes together when he's caught cheating on his long-distance girlfriend. But Heavy's finally messed with the wrong girl and he's going to learn -- the hard way -- that payback can be quite a bitch.

A pleasant departure from their more earnest work, POUNDED is a fun little gem that manages to squeeze in a lot of twists and a bit of edge to this classic tale of scorned love.
