Commentary

Don't let the title fool you, this is no sand-between-your-toes Sun-In-scented Saturday at Coney Island. The people that Adrian Tomine writes about don't go to the beach. Probably ever. Or if they do, they return with sun poisoning and emotional trauma and discuss it at length with their much-happier-and-significantly-more-attractive-if-less-importantly-talented best friends.

If the people that Adrian Tomine writes about have sex at all, they have sex with crazy people who are bad for them. Or mean people. Or sad, stupid people. The people that Adrian Tomine writes about never have healthy sex with nice people. Or if they do, they resent it.

They make half-gestures and bad decisions. They seldom end up far from where they started. Mostly, the people that Adrian Tomine writes about don't want to be the People That Adrian Tomine Writes About. But they are. And you know them. They're in your English class, at your job, in the apartment across the hall and sometimes in your head. If you have ever wanted to hit the reset button on your life, thought you were too smart to be happy or hated the prettiest girl in the room, read SUMMER BLONDE and let your cheeks flush.

Then write Tomine a letter and discuss it at length.
