Preacher: Gone To Texas (vol. 1)

Credits: Written by Garth Ennis and Illustrated by Steve Dillon
Publisher: Vertigo (DC)

What Pulp Fiction was to late-nineties cinema, so PREACHER was to comics: An overzealous crash-course through larger than life Americana pulp lore, equal parts absurd, profane, stirring, hysterical and utterly grotesque. A pastiche of westerns, the supernatural, the horrible, and the just plain bizarre, PREACHER careened its way through the end of the 20th century, hitting touchstone after touchstone of American trash culture and laughing itself sick all the way.

Jesse Custer, a troubled man of the cloth, is on the brink of alcoholic and spiritual collapse when - after a night spent with his two best friends Jesus and Jack - the supernatural hybrid child of an angel and a devil finds him, infusing its energy with his own. Jesse is pursed by the child's heavenly keepers and discovers that God has, um, quit. Joined by his ex-girlfriend-cum-hit woman and a charming Shane MacGowan-esque vampire, the unlikely threesome set off on a road trip to find God and make him atone for what he's done.

PREACHER is tough to define: it's a road story, a love story, and a study of friendship. It's about family, it's about making things right, it's about standing four square for what you believe in. It's about cannibals, sadists, and cannibal sadists. It's about Lee Marvin, John Wayne, Kurt Cobain, Laurel and Hardy. It's about drinking and fighting and fucking. It's about the end of the world. Capturing the post-Tarantino pop culture zeitgeist, PREACHER's dirty little secret is that it's really an over-the-top and absurd love letter to America in all of its over-the-top and absurd manifestations.
