Eagle vol. 1

Credits: Written and Illustrated by Kaiji Kawaguchi
Publisher: Viz

Politics hasn't been this interesting in a long time. But it's not every day we're rewarded with a work as deliciously clever and captivating as Kaiji Kawaguchi's EAGLE.

As the subtitle reads, this is about "The Making of an Asian-American President". Over the course of this thick, five volume series that spans over two thousand pages of material (don't let that scare you), we're invited to follow the presidential campaign of Kenneth Yamaoka, the good Senator from New York - a war-hero, a successful lawyer, a family man, and the first Japanese-American to aim for the White House. Our guide is Takashi Jo, a young reporter from Japan, who is hand picked by Yamaoka for reasons known only to himself to document the campaign.

What's particularly impressive about EAGLE is Kawaguchi's in-depth knowledge of not only the American political system, but of American society in general. He's certainly got his thumb on the pulse of the public, creating a completely intoxicating series that will dispel any preconceived notion of Japanese comics.

But this certianly isn't a policy lesson.

Chock full of drama, intrigue and scandal, this is comics version of The West Wing. And it's every bit as addictive.
