Credits: Written and Illustrated by Peter Kuper
Publisher: Top Shelf

If you're not familiar with Peter Kuper's work, you've probably seen it countless times and just didn't know it. Maybe on the cover of Newsweek or Time Magazine, or in The New York Times or The New Yorker; maybe you've seen his comic strips in Details or Heavy Metal or Mad Magazine. If you're into comics, you might have seen The System, his excellent, wordless graphic novel published a few years ago by Vertigo. Personally, I know him best for editing and contributing to World War 3, an underground political comics anthology that's been running for something like twenty years.

Regardless of the source, once you flip through SPEECHLESS, you'll undoubtedly remember his expressive, intelligent (and, typically, wordless) comics for sometime to come. This book is a career retrospective that is a creative mix of comics and art wrapped in a breathtaking hardcover package. From his magazine and newspaper work through his comics and illustrated travel logs, SPEECHLESS is a tour-de-force of political cartooning and graphic storytelling the likes of which I've rarely seen.

Among these pages are at least a dozen comic strips and short stories, some published here for the first time, among countless paintings, drawings, sketches and miscellaneous art pieces, including the hilarious Fuck the Fucking Fuckers strip that was rejected by Details. Whether you're a casual reader or an aspiring cartoonist, you'll undoubtedly find some new and interesting experiments in artistic expression within these pages. And you'll know Peter Kuper by name as well as by work.
