Dixie Road vol. 1

Credits: Written by Jean Dufaux and Illustrated by Hugues Labiano
Publisher: NBM

Somewhere between the novels of John Steinbeck and the films of Samuel Fuller is DIXIE ROAD, a Dust Bowl fiction steeped in moving characters and soaked in taut melodrama. Exploring Depression era themes of poverty and racism, Dufaux and Labiano paint a stark picture of a society torn about by economic crisis and compromised by human fallacies. This is a story about damaged people from a damaged time heading towards an inevitably doomed future. And it's entirely entertaining.

Our journey begins and ends with Dixie, a young woman on the verge of adulthood living a secret life with her mother, Nadine. Her father is a missing fugitive and the two women are trying to make a new life for themselves. Duchamp is a wealthy businessman who knows Nadine's secret and is prepared to hang her out to dry if she doesn't submit to his advances. As for Nadine, she only wants her husband back - the last thing in the world that's good for her. And he's a lot closer to her then she thinks...

More often then not, the best insight into American culture is typically found abroad, and Dufaux and Labiano, two European creators, don't disappoint. This is a tight script with many layers, offering a rich and compelling story not typical to mainstream comics. Accompanied by Labiano's highly detailed and expressive art, DIXIE ROAD is a complete package for someone looking for an engaging thriller that twists and turns when you least expect it.
