FROM CLOUD 99 was one of the most impressive debuts in recent memory, introducing best-selling European author, Yslaire, to English reading audiences. An artistic tour-de-force blending traditional and painted comics with a modern graphic design sense, this was something entirely unique to the American comics scene.
MEMORIES PART ONE introduced us to Eva Stern, a 98-year old psychoanalyst who is receiving pictures from an anonymous party. But these aren't ordinary pictures, these are her most stirring experiences from the entire span of her life - impossible moments caught on film. The first volume read like a dream, allowing Yslaire's highly detailed, expressive art to take center stage and establish an atmosphere of mystery and intrigue.
The second volume, MEMORIES PART TWO, begins to chip away at the enigma. We meet Eva's brother, Frank, a communist revolutionary who disappeared sometime between the World Wars. As we weave back and forth between present and past, visiting some of the most horrific events of the twentieth century, the distinction between fact and fiction becomes harder to discern.
I imagine the truth will be revealed to be somewhere in-between...
