DIXIE ROAD Book Two is a transitional volume that finds Dixie, our young protagonist, a fugitive on the run with her reunited mother and father. Their flight across state lines grants them a temporary relief from the authorities, allowing series author Jean Dufaux the opportunity to explore the tragic circumstances of Depression Era America.
Poverty, land barons, taxation and the iron fist of corrupt lawmen are the rule of a land where the daily grind for survival becomes all encompassing - and stealing five minutes alone against the dusk sky might very well be its only reward. It's no coincidence that Dufaux chooses to weave in cameos here by James Agee and Walker Evans, the famous writer/photographer duo who chronicled the Great Depression, into Dixie's path during this reflective pause; serving as catalysts in her efforts to eclipse the collapsing world around her.
This second volume continues to deliver a rewarding combination of balanced melodrama and historical discovery, set against the backdrop of Labiano's simply beautiful art. DIXIE ROAD is the consummate period piece. A welcome addition to the comics milieu.
