Hate: Fun With Buddy & Lisa (vol. 3)

Credits: Written and Illustrated by Peter Bagge
Publisher: Fantagraphics Books

Comes a time in everyone's life as a young adult when you start figuring that maybe, just maybe, throwing your empties on the floor when you're done and sleeping until 3 in the afternoon is a crap way to live. It's a harrowing, startling realization - that you will never be a rock star, you will never accidentally get rich, and perhaps your wit, genius, and talent will somehow NOT be recognized while one lives under such circumstances. Peter Bagge's motley band of ur-hipsters are beginning to wise up to all this in FUN WITH BUDDY & LISA.

Our characters begin scurrying about the decks of their quickly shipwrecking lives, looking for something more than the scene in early-'90s Seattle can offer: I'd say "meaning," but that's a little too un-ironic for these climes, so let's just call it 'a point.' And it's the search for that point that becomes plot, as Bagge eases away from the observational vignette-type of storytelling from the first two HATE collections and into a kind-of master plan for the kids - Gasp as Buddy almost drunkenly drowns Lisa! Thrill as Buddy and Lisa try peddling their wares to Collector Scum! Titter as George gets a sugar momma, and Stinky stars some porn!

Quite possibly the only comic to ever examine table manners and dinner party etiquette for full-on junkies, HATE is both laugh-out-loud funny and wince-in-silence accurate, each in painful doses, and frequently on every page.
