The TechnoPriests: Initiation (vol. 1)

Credits: Written by Alexandro Jodorowsky and Illustrated by Zoran Janjetov and Fred Beltran
Publisher: Humanoids (DC)

Commentary

At times a farce, at times mind-bending science fiction, THE TECHNOPRIESTS is told in the same vein as Jodorowsky's groundbreaking Metabarons series. It also unites the acclaimed writer and filmmaker with Zoran Janjetov, his collaborator on The Incal, as well as Fred Beltran, the digital artist who recently wowed readers in the pages of Metal Hurlant magazine, and has remastered the artwork here to produce an entirely unique visual experience.

Set in a distant future where the galaxy is governed by corporate conglomerates that sedate the people with virtual entertainment and consumerism - a not-so-veiled satire of our times - we're introduced to Albino, the Supreme TechnoPriest and leader of the order that produces the universe's interactive entertainments.

Flashing back to his origins, Albino recalls his mother, a holy virgin who gives birth to three children after being raped by sixty (!) space pirates. With his weak physical form and pale skin condition, Albino is of no use in his mother's quest for revenge and is cast aside to the TechnoPriests, who train the greatest and most creative minds from all the colonies or put them to death. From the get go, we know Albino is destined to eventually betray his gamemaking mission and lead his disciples to a new beginning. THE TECHNOPRIESTS is that story why.

Originally published as three hardcover graphic novels, this new edition combines the first half of this series into one affordable trade paperback, which'll hopefully help these books find their proper place in today's comic landscape.
