Lazarus Churchyard is a 400 year old immortal junkie of the future with the all the good looks and casual elegance of a post-apocalyptic Joey Ramone. Poor Laz never meant to be immortal, see? His body was experimentally infused with a self-healing plastic in the 1980's and now he can't die. He's cynical and witty, so despite the grim version of the future, the book's pretty funny. Fans of Ellis' Transmetropolitan will find the seeds of that humor and social commentary here.
The prize of The Collection is "Lucy's Drowning." Lucy is the little girl version of the plastics experiment that preceded Laz. Once the data was collected, Lucy's technician was allowed to do with her as he pleased. That lasted until he found religion and felt the need to destroy the evidence. Except that Lucy couldn't really be destroyed. It's creepy like a music box in a child's empty room.
